Astronomers discover existence of a minimoon three years after Earth captures it
The moon has been a muse for writers, singers, poets, historians and scientists alike. It now seems that it will have to, for a temporary period, share its attention with a newly discovered minimoon.
A minimoon, according to Live Science, is a temporarily captured object, like a space rock, that got caught in Earth's orbit for several months or years before shooting off into the distant solar system again (or burning up in our planet's atmosphere).
Researchers from the Catalina Sky Survey at the University of Arizona have found 2020 CD3, a small, rare celestial object that has gotten caught in earth’s orbit and is circling our planet. Making it the earth’s natural satellite and thus, our second moon. We can’t wait for some singer to make a rhyme for this little guy.
It is around 1.9-3.5 metres in diameter and has the surface brightness of a typical carbon-rich asteroid. Amateur astrophysicist Tony Dunn tweeted out that this minimoon has been orbiting earth from the past three years and it could be leaving the orbit anytime this year, somewhere around April. It will then continue along its way and go on to orbit the sun.
Here's an animated GIF of our new mini-moon 2020 CD3, discovered by @WierzchosKacper. Rotating frame keeps the Earth/Sun line stationary. Orbital elements courtesy of IUA MPEC. https://t.co/dok3jn3G9hhttps://t.co/x1DXWLq2vm pic.twitter.com/O3eRaOIYjB
— Tony Dunn (@tony873004) February 26, 2020
Astronomers believe that at any given point in time, there is at least one minimoon that is orbiting around the earth. So what’s the big deal about this one?
Well, barring one instance, we haven’t seen these other objects. In fact, this is only the second time we have been able to spot a minimoon. The first time astronomers saw a minimoon was in 2006 and that asteroid was called 2006 RH120. It was around 2–3 metres in diameter and orbited around the earth for 18 months. However, this asteroid orbits the sun and one every 20 years comes close enough to the earth to enter its orbit through what is called a temporary satellite capture.
A senior research specialist from NASA and the University of Arizona, Kacper Wierzchos was the first scientist to announce this discovery on 26 February.
BIG NEWS (thread 1/3). Earth has a new temporarily captured object/Possible mini-moon called 2020 CD3. On the night of Feb. 15, my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Teddy Pruyne and I found a 20th magnitude object. Here are the discovery images. pic.twitter.com/zLkXyGAkZl
— Kacper Wierzchos (@WierzchosKacper) February 26, 2020
The International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center made an announcement about this discovery as well.
“Orbit integrations indicate that this object is temporarily bound to the Earth. No evidence of perturbations due to solar radiation pressure is seen and no link to a known artificial object has been found. Further observations and dynamical studies are strongly encouraged."
Since then, the existence of this object has been confirmed by other observatories. However, more analysis is needed to confirm that the minimoon is a rock from space and not some junk in space that is floating around the abyss.
Twitter users had something to say about this new addition:
Go home moon.. Your drunk.

Pre-approved antiviral drugs could be first line of defense for COVID-19 infection
Already approved broad-spectrum antiviral drugs may offer a first-line treatment for the novel coronavirus which has so far killed over 2,700 people and infected around 80,000, according to a study unveiled on Thursday.
Researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) noted that there is no vaccine or cure for the virus insight. This means that doctors can do little more than offer supportive treatment to the very sick, and hope their bodies can survive the infection, they said.
According to the study, published as a pre-proof in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, already approved drugs might hold the key to treating the new virus.
"Drug repurposing is a strategy for generating additional value from an existing drug by targeting diseases other than that for which it was originally intended," said Denis Kainov, an associate professor at NTNU.
"For example, teicoplanin, oritavancin, dalbavancin and monensin are approved antibiotics that have been shown to inhibit corona- and other viruses in the laboratory," Kainov said.
The researchers said these and other already tested "safe-in-man" broad-spectrum antiviral drugs are good candidates for treating the disease to start with, given that there are currently no treatments for the new coronavirus.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the virus called COVID-19 can cause mild symptoms including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, and fever. It can be more severe for some persons and can lead to pneumonia or breathing difficulties.
The researchers noted that the advantage of repurposing a drug is that all of the details surrounding the drug development are already known. These include the chemical synthesis steps, manufacturing processes, and information regarding the different phases of clinical testing.
"Repositioning of launched or even failed drugs to viral diseases provides unique translational opportunities, including a substantially higher probability of success to market as compared with developing new virus-specific drugs and vaccines," the researchers said.
It also offers significantly reduced cost and timeline to clinical availability, they said.
The researchers reviewed information on the discovery and development of broad-spectrum antiviral agents (BSAAs), which are drugs that target viruses from two or more different viral families. They summarised what they found for 120 drugs that had already been shown to be safe for human use and created a database. Thirty-one of these were found by the researchers to be possible candidates for prophylaxis and treatment of the COVID-19 infections.
The researchers also found that clinical investigations have recently begun five possible drug candidates to treat the COVID-19 virus.

John Tenniel, the illustrator for 'Alice in Wonderland', celebrated in today's Google doodle
The man best remembered for bringing to life the characters of Lewis Carroll’s timeless “Alice in Wonderland” series, would have been 200 years today.
John Tenniel is one of the most highly-regarded Victorian illustrators and painters. He was born on this day in 1820 in London. From a young age, he taught himself to illustrate and at the age of 16, he submitted his first work, an oil painting, for exhibition at the Society of British Artists.
In 1850, Tenniel became a political cartoonist with the historic weekly magazine Punch. Tenniel had a distinctive style, due in part to his near-photographic memory.
Google writes in its blog, "It was this unique approach that most likely caught the attention of writer and professor Charles Dodgson, whose pen name was Lewis Carroll. After an introduction in 1864, Tenniel agreed to illustrate Carroll’s new book, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” released the following year."
Post that, Tenniel also illustrated for “Through the Looking Glass” in 1872.
For his contributions to both Punch and Alice in Wonderland, Tenniel received a knighthood in 1893.

Realme confirms that Realme X50 5G already supports NavIC, as will just about every new phone that launches this year
It was just a couple of days ago that Xiaomi India Head, Manu Jain announced that their next Redmi phone wil support ISRO's India’s satellite navigation system, almost immediately, arch rival company Realme announced that their smartphone already supports NavIC.
As per a tweet by Realme India head Madhav Sheth, Realme's latest smartphone Realme X50 5G (Review) already supports NavIC technology and their upcoming phones will support that as well. He further revealed that they are launching another smartphone on 5 March that will also have this feature.
It's just a little bit silly that companies are fighting over ownership of the title of "first phone with NavIC", especially because the new generation of smartphone chipsets all support NavIC by default and it's just a matter of time before the market is flooded with NavIC supporting phones.
Yes, our ultimate flagship, #realmeX50Pro features #NavIC & even our upcoming phone will feature it as well.
So World's first, World's second, coming in a row, all for India.
Plan to talk more on 5th March. See you there with 1500 #realme fans. https://t.co/SXwcu1vYyI— Madhav 5G (@MadhavSheth1) February 27, 2020
Why NavIC is a big deal?
NavIC — Navigation with Indian Constellation — is the regional geo-positioning system designed in India by ISRO to provide accurate positioning in India and around the Indian mainland. It is considered to be at par with US-based GPS, Russia's Glonass, and Galileo developed by Europe.
Glorious new chapter for tech in #India!
Proud to announce that upcoming #Redmi phone will be 1st in world to feature @isro's #NavIC - Nation's own satellite navigation system! ️

Indian women scientists stress on pay gaps, equality, fair policies in research
As the country marks the National Science Day on Friday, many leading Indian women scientists have stressed on the need for the right kind of support, equality, and gender-fair policies in the field of research.
National Science Day is celebrated on 28 February each year commemorating Indian physicist C V Raman's discovery in 1928 of the Raman effect — the scattering of photons or light particles by matter. Raman received a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
Of the 607 Nobel medals awarded so far in scientific disciplines globally, just 20 have gone to women.
Noting that a career in science is a demanding and tough option, Rupamanjari Ghosh, Vice-Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University, Greater Noida said there are additional barriers — often unintentional and unconscious ones — which are put up along the career path of women in science.
"When such a career demands long hours, there are issues of lack of security and basic amenities that affect women more adversely than men in this society. We need to pay active attention to these preventable problems," said Ghosh, a Professor of Physics, told PTI.
G Geetha, Professor and Head, Division of Research and Development at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab, emphasised on closing the gender gap and moving towards women-led projects in science. She noted that out of the 560 awardees of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, only 18 recipients have been women. The prize is one of the highest multidisciplinary science awards in India.
According to Geetha, women represent only about a fifth of senior authors in all published research.
A study, published in the journal PLOS One in 2018, assessed 293,557 research articles from 54 journals, and found that "29.8 per cent of all research authors, and 33.1 per cent of the first, 31.8 per cent of the co-, and 18.1 per cent of the last authors were women."
Another study by the UK's Intellectual Property Office (IPO) noted that women inventors account for just under 13 per cent of patent applications globally.
For society to evolve with equality, Geetha feels the state and union governments should provide women grants for startups, core research, travel, and prototype development.
"Universities should preferentially encourage women entrepreneurs and women startups. A survey has to be conducted on the participation of women as chairpersons or committee member in policymaking, Geetha added.
Professor Manjula Reddy, Chief Scientist, Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad believes that science in India is progressing at a rapid pace since the last decade, thanks to the focus and initiatives on education and research.
"Setting up new educational and research institutions across India has contributed to this cause," she said.
However, Reddy, who won the Infosys Prize 2019, thinks India is lagging behind in basic sciences as compared to developed countries and needs to make serious efforts to fill the gap.
"This can be achieved with structured funding, more focus on education and research activities. Basic research is a developmental activity; it may not have an immediate tangible benefit, but has long-term sustainability and is the bedrock for future technological advances," she explained.
Gagandeep Kang, Professor in the Department of Gastrointestinal Sciences at the Christian Medical College in Tamil Nadu believes that there is a lot of work to be done to build an understanding of the process and outputs of science — a spirit of inquiry, and a deep trust in science and scientists.
"As scientists, some are doing reasonably well in many fields, but there are many areas where both quality people and skills are limited or lacking," said Kang, who was awarded the prestigious Infosys Prize in Life Sciences in 2016.
Kang feels India does not have sufficient researchers working across various disciplines.
"That means we are unable to grow up to global standards, and there are few areas that I am aware of where an Indian group is among the world leaders," she added.

Black hole explosion, 390 mn light years away, carves out crater from surrounding hot gas
Astronomers have discovered the biggest explosion seen in the universe, originating from a supermassive black hole.
Scientists reported Thursday that the blast came from a black hole in a cluster of galaxies 390 million light-years away.
The explosion was so large it carved out a crater in the hot gas that could hold 15 Milky Ways, said lead author Simona Giacintucci of the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington. It’s five times bigger than the previous record-holder.
Astronomers used NASA’s Chandra X-Ray Observatory to make the discovery, along with a European space observatory and ground telescopes. They believe the explosion came from the heart of the Ophiuchus cluster of thousands of galaxies: a large galaxy at the center contains a colossal black hole.
Black holes don’t just draw matter in. They also blast out jets of material and energy.
The first hint of this giant explosion actually came in 2016. Chandra images of the Ophiuchus galaxy cluster revealed an unusual curved edge, but scientists ruled out an eruption given the amount of energy that would have been needed to carve out such a large cavity in the gas.
#News: Scientists have discovered the biggest explosion seen in the Universe!💥 This record-breaking eruption came from a #BlackHole in the Ophiuchus #galaxy cluster, located about 390 million light years from Earth! The #science behind the #discovery: https://t.co/eGhfuruGd9 pic.twitter.com/C3kwA7GB4M
— Chandra Observatory (@chandraxray) February 27, 2020
The two space observatories, along with radio data from telescopes in Australia and India, confirmed that the curvature was, indeed, part of a cavity.
“The radio data fit inside the X-rays like a hand in a glove,” co-author Maxim Markevitch of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, said in a statement. “This is the clincher that tells us an eruption of unprecedented size occurred here.”
The blast is believed to be over by now: There are no signs of jets currently shooting from the black hole. More observations are needed in other wavelengths to better understand what occurred, according to the team.
The findings appeared in the Astrophysical Journal.
