Lockdown Legends Part 5: Tech that got me through the lockdown feat. Sony, SoundMAGIC, Xbox, Samsung, Google

Editor's Note: This story is part of a series about tech gadgets and devices that helped Team tech2 and some of our friends through the pandemic, lockdown, and the year 2020, in general.

If there’s one thing that the lockdown has taught us, it is that we need technology more than we ever thought we would. In 2020, every spare gadget in my house served a purpose, whether it was my raggedy old Motorola Moto G (2012) with a broken camera (that served as a media player for my nephew), or something like a simple Bluetooth speaker that was great for family video calls and Zoom birthday celebrations.

Can sniff pork vindaloo from a mile away

However, technology not only helped with entertainment and work, but also served as a tool to help us overcome the bad stuff that took place during the lockdown. My grandmother passed away (in Karnataka) and my entire family (Mumbai and elsewhere) had no choice but to attend her funeral and burial via a private Facebook Live stream.

Image: Tech2/Sheldon Pinto

My 4-year old nephew now knows the keyboard shortcuts to a Zoom call, because school. And my father and mother now know to use GPay, something they would have never ventured into had it not been for the pandemic.

And while I was stuck at home with my family of 9, I also had to figure out ways of isolating myself from them, because work goes on and you can feel a bit claustrophobic within the 4 walls of your apartment, especially when you’re stuck there for months.

To get work done, I needed to concentrate and focus. And no, I’m not the type of a person who can get work done with music playing in the background. I need my silence!

Sony WH1000 XM3. Image: Tech2/Sheldon Pinto

Living besides a main road in an apartment in Mumbai City means a lot of traffic noise (lockdown or not). That, alongwith the chaos of 3 other family members who are constantly chatting away on their respective work calls and 2 kids, translates to utter chaos in a 2 BHK apartment. In this chaotic household filled with noise, I was glad I had already purchased the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones. While they did a fine job of letting me sleep peacefully on domestic and international flights (in non-COVID times), they also pumped out some really good audio. I am no audiophile, but I have used better audio gear over the years. Still, nothing quite beats the XM3s when it comes to noise cancellation, and I’m glad I had them with me during the lockdown.

SoundMAGIC E10C. Image: Tech2/Sheldon Pinto

Another audio product that became oddly useful for another purpose were the SoundMAGIC E10C wired earphones. I originally purchased them to plug them into my Xbox controller for basic audio while playing games. But thanks to the lockdown, I found them extremely useful on work-related Zoom calls, as a wired mic beats a Bluetooth headset in terms of clarity and pickup. Apart from the Xbox controller and plugging them into my laptop, they also delivered pretty good audio for something that costs just Rs 1749.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. Image: Tech2/Sheldon Pinto

One device I was lucky to have with me during the lockdown was the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Sent across for review, it was left behind for quite a while, long enough for me to drop it and crack the glass back (it still worked fine after the drop). While it came in for review, I ended up using it to shoot my product photos. I prefer using smartphones because I hate fidgeting with cameras for an image that’s going to be compressed for the web. It’s got a nice 108 MP sensor that really helps bring out the details no matter what you are shooting. The OIS-stabilised 5X optical zoom also came in really handy for the same. While it’s one of the more capable ultra-premium Android smartphones on the market, I’m still waiting for Samsung to introduce a Snapdragon variant of their flagships for the Indian market.

Microsoft Xbox One X. Image: Tech2/Sheldon Pinto

Moving to the lighter side of things, is my Xbox One X. I purchased the Xbox One X around December 2019 solely because I wanted to try it out after sticking to PlayStation and PC gaming during my college days. I decided to get an Xbox after selling off my brand-new Nintendo Switch that was an impromptu purchase, after giving into the hype and watching a lot of colleagues game on it for years. Long story short, I just did not like the fidgety digital sticks on the Switch.

I’m glad I had the Xbox console with me during the lockdown. The games transported me from the four walls of my bedroom to exploring the UK (in Forza Horizon 4), to the marshlands in Russia (with Mudrunner), to the US (The Crew 2) and to any race track I wanted with Assetto Corsa. Yes, I love racing and open-world games. They kept me distracted from the chaotic world around me not just in my home, but also the depressing Corona-related news. In short, it was a good outlet and I am glad I had it with me during those days.

Those who know me, will also know that I’m not a fitness person. But given my deteriorating posture during the lockdown, I had to take up some form of exercise. Once the norms relaxed a bit, I started going for brisk walks (you did not expect me to jog did you?). And given that it was the first time I started an exercise activity, I needed to track it. Since I’m not a normal human being who sticks around with 1 smartphone for a year (I switch between 4 in a month), I needed a tool that could track and save my data across device ecosystems.

So, I chose Google Fit as a way to track my daily activity. Without a WearOS-powered smartwatch, it’s a basic fitness tracking tool that keeps a tab of your activity using location tracking and the phone’s built in sensors. It won’t give you too many details about your activities without a supported fitness band or a watch, but it got me the basic stats I needed (to keep myself motivated) along with a bit of accuracy to keep track of my progress.

In short, tech kept me busy, isolated, motivated and sane during the lockdown. Digital detox can take a walk!

Japan plans to create wooden satellites which they hope will cut down on space junk

A Japanese startup called Sumitomo Forestry has teamed up with researchers from the Kyoto University, to work on a wooden satellite, reported BBC. While the entire plan is in a nascent stage, the project aims at tackling the increasing threat of space debris. Sumitomo Forestry is currently working on testing the use of wood materials in space and soon they will be experimenting with wood in extreme locations on Earth. Going ahead with their research, the two teams plan to launch the world's first satellite made out of wood in 2023.

Artist illustration of the junk that exists in space. Image credit: Wikipedia

The report says that wooden satellites were a better alternative to the existing ones as these would burn up after entering the atmosphere without releasing any harmful substances. No waste will be created and the risk of space junk falling back on Earth can be lessened.

Takao Doi, a professor at Kyoto University and Japanese astronaut, was quoted by BBC to state that all the satellites that re-enter Earth’s atmosphere at present “burn and create tiny alumina particles which will float in the upper atmosphere for many years”. This can prove to be harmful in the long run, something they aspire to prevent by using wood as their material.

Although the company has not revealed the name of the wood for R& D purposes, they are working on developing wooden materials that are “highly resistant to temperature changes and sunlight”. The report also drew attention to the threat the space junk poses. It mentions that in the coming years, more and more countries are going to send more satellites. But already of the total number of satellites circling our planet, about 60 per cent of them are defunct according to the World Economic Forum (WEF).

A report by ARS Technica however pointed out that just using wood for satellites is not really going to make a difference. The article cites figures to suggest a huge amount of space junk consists of the booster or the equipment used to propel the satellites into space. Even if wood is incorporated, this number is not going to be affected. Although if the satellite de-orbits, the wood will completely burn down, but this will not stop some tiny bits of aluminium from getting into the mix as many of them can come from the rockets.

EU still holds out on granting approval to Oxford-AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine

The coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, which was approved Wednesday in Britain, is unlikely to get a green light in the European Union in the next month, according to the European Medicines Agency (EMA). The regulator, charged with overseeing vaccines' authorisation in the EU before they can be marketed, approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on December 21. It is expected to rule on Moderna's vaccine on January 6. But an EU ruling on the AstraZeneca-Oxford jab will take some time.

"Additional scientific information on issues related to quality, safety and efficacy of the vaccine is deemed necessary to support the rigour required for a conditional marketing authorisation (CMA) and this has been requested from the company," the EMA said in a statement. "Further information from the ongoing clinical trials is also expected from January."

The Amsterdam-based agency earlier told AFP that it had not yet received any formal marketing authorisation and that it had set no timetable for approving the vaccine.

The regulator's deputy executive director Noel Walthion told Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad on Tuesday that a possible approval in January is "unlikely".

The AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine is currently undergoing a "rolling review" which allows the EMA to examine safety and efficacy data as they are released, even before a formal application for authorisation is filed by the manufacturer.

This procedure speeds up the evaluation of a marketing authorisation application once it is made, the EMA said.

The agency said Wednesday it is "aware that the UK MHRA has granted a temporary authorisation of supply of the vaccine in the emergency use setting, which is distinct from a marketing authorisation."

An AstraZeneca spokesperson told AFP it "has submitted a full data package to support an application for conditional marketing authorisation for the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine to the European Medicines Agency."

The spokesperson added: "AstraZeneca has been submitting data on a rolling basis and will continue to work closely with the EMA to support the start of a formal CMA application process."

Britain is the first country in the world to approve the vaccine, which is cheaper to produce and easier to store and transport than the Pfizer-BioNTech jab.

For EU countries, it is up to the European Commission in Brussels to issue the final green light after EMA approval.

Inoculations with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine began in the 27-member bloc over the weekend.

Solar Orbiter approaches Venus in a flyby, conducts some planetary observations

The joint US-European Solar Orbiter spacecraft reached its closest approach to Venus on 27 December, at 6.09 pm IST (27 December at  7:39 am EST). The spacecraft managed to go as close as 7,500 kilometres from the top of the planet's cloud tops, reported Space.com. Speaking at the press briefing, Daniel Müller, project scientist for the mission at the European Space Agency said that the Solar Orbiter is a mission not designed specifically to take Venus observations, but since they are always looking for bonus opportunities to do science, they will be doing observations when they approach Venus.

Artist's impression of Solar Orbiter making a flyby at Venus. Image credit: ESA/ATG medialab

During the flyby, scientists were able to gather data using the spacecraft's magnetometer, radio and plasma waves instrument and some of the sensors available on the energetic particle detector.

Tim Horbury, a physicist at Imperial College London and principal investigator of one of Solar Orbiter's instruments had stated that at the distance the Space Orbiter is able to reach, one of the key things that they will be looking at is how Venus interacts with the solar wind that is flowing past it.

Since 27 December's flyby was the Solar Orbiter's first tryst with Venus, the team was not sure what to expect from it and will take a few days to dig into the data the instruments gathered.

The Solar Orbiter's main objective is to perform close-up, high-resolution studies of the Sun and inner heliosphere. It is intended to brave the fierce heat and carry its telescopes to just one-quarter of Earth's distance from the Sun. At that distance, the Solar Orbiter will be exposed to sunlight 13 times more intense than what we feel on Earth.

Apple is currently working on a foldable iPhone that is likely to launch in 2022-23: Report

Apple is working on a foldable phone and it is going to be similar to Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G in terms of design, revealed a recent leak. The tip added that the Cupertino-based firm is looking at a 2022-23 timeframe to launch the product, if it actually does. Youtuber Jon Prosser said in a recent YouTube video of Front Page Tech channel that Apple was currently in the early stages of development and was testing the outer shell of the future iPhone at a factory in Shenzhen, China.

Apple Foldable phone. Image:

Testing the hinge mechanism is important as many foldable phones have failed to withstand continuous flips upon use.

The product will fold down like a clamshell, revealing a wider screen once unfolded. Like Samsung flip phones, this device will also have a smaller screen on the outer panel. The video clip also shared a concept image of the folding iPhone for making it easier to visualize. He cited his sources to state that Apple was working on two devices and was going to select one after preliminary tests to move ahead with.

Prosser made sure that Apple was not planning to introduce the device just next year, maybe in 2022 or even 2023. This gives the company to fully test the limits and release a strong foldable phone. Also, such a wide time period gives the smartphone brand the scope to go ahead with a completely different design in the long run.

Apple has been working on multiple concepts for bendable displays for many years now. In 2019, an Apple patent application had come to surface which hinted at a three-fold form factor. The illustrations found on the patent application showed that the potential iPhone might come with both an inward as well as an outward bend. While many other firms have been reported to work on foldable phone designs, Samsung, Microsoft, Huawei and Motorola are some of the names that currently have models out in the market.

OnePlus Buds Z, Soundcore Liberty 2 and more: Best TWS earphones of 2020 under Rs 7,500 in India

This was the year the budget True Wireless (TWS) earphones truly evolved. The TWS revolution started with Apple launching their first Airpods at the end of 2016, and capturing people’s imaginations. As with all Apple products, the price tag was beyond the reach of the majority, and as expected, there was an attack of the clones soon after from various brands. Despite being more affordable, most of those products were too nascent to spend your hard-earned money on. In fact, even at the start of this year, I remember suggesting buying a wireless neckband instead for better sound quality. But not anymore!

From limitations on sound quality to latency issues to insufficient battery backup, everything seems to be a thing of the distant past. We now have products under Rs 7,500, and all the way down to less than Rs 2,000 that can go neck-and-neck with their wireless neckband counterparts, and also give the Airpods a run for their money. We happened to test dozens of TWS buds this year, and after factoring in performance, features, battery life and other aspects, we have shortlisted a select few that we believe are the best TWS earbuds under Rs 7,500 this year.

Before we proceed, a quick word on how we go about objectively evaluating something that’s largely subjective -- sound quality. There is generally no one-size-fits-all solution in audio products. Some may prefer bass-heavy sound, while others may give vocal clarity and detail in audio a higher preference; nothing wrong with either. What we as audio reviewers look for in these products, is the capability to reproduce each of the three frequency ranges (lows, mids and highs) with a good degree of clarity, along with a good balance between the three to make the sound output enjoyable for the listener. Now, let’s see who made the cut this year.

Best TWS Earbuds of 2020 under Rs 7,500

Lypertek Tevi

The Lypertek Tevi (Review) is probably the only pair of TWS earbuds that manage to produce close to a neutral sound signature in this budget. The mids and highs are handled wonderfully well with great detail in sound, and the lows aren’t boosted like in case of most earphones. The soundstage is quite good too, and so is the instrument separation. These earphones are not meant for those who like thumping bass, but crave sound clarity and finer detail.

Lypertek Tevi

These TWS earbuds are well-built and IPX7-rated water resistant. The call quality is pretty good too. But their best feature is the battery life. On a full charge, they go on for a shade over 8 hours at 70-75 percent volume level on Qualcomm’s aptX codec. What’s even better is that the accompanying case can charge them 6 times over, taking the overall battery backup in excess of 55 hours, which is outstanding. With so much going in its favour, it wasn’t too hard to pick the Lypertek Tevi in our list of best budget TWS earphones of 2020.

Soundcore Liberty 2

It was an extremely close contest between the Soundcore Liberty 2 and the Creative Outlier Air, with fairly similar sound signatures. They are evenly matched when it comes to sound quality, battery life, IPX5 rating and support for Qualcomm’s aptX codecs too. What eventually tilted the scales in favour of the former was better design, ergonomics and call quality. The multifunction button is placed at the side, and doesn’t push the buds into the ear when you press it. 90 percent of wireless earbuds with physical buttons get this part wrong.

Soundcore Liberty 2

The sound output is pleasantly warm, with a good amount of bass that’s tight and doesn’t overshadow the mids much. The vocals are clear, most instruments can be distinctly heard, and the highs are sharp enough without causing fatigue. There is good detail in sound with a fairly broad soundstage. Battery life is good too, with the buds clocking close to 7.5 hours on a full charge and about 30 hours with the case. The Soundcore Liberty 2 covers most of the bases, and its sound is bound to impress a broader audience looking for a good balance between thumping bass and sound clarity. Hence, one of the best TWS earbuds of 2020 in our opinion.

Amazfit PowerBuds

Amazfit PowerBuds (Review) are the most unique and innovative TWS earbuds of 2020. They don’t just capture the beats in your audio but also of your heart. In other words, these IP55-rated dust- and water-resistant earbuds come with fitness tracking features thanks to a built-in PPG heart rate sensor for monitoring your heart rate during workouts. The information is relayed to a smartphone app that then calculates fitness stats like intensity of workout and calories burned. Music and fitness activities often go hand in hand, and it was a great idea to combine the two in one tiny package.

Amazfit Powerbuds.

Extra features aside, the primary job of an earphone is to sound good, and that they do. The sound quality of these buds is quite lively, and though not perfectly neutral, it is quite enjoyable in a wide variety of music genres. All three frequency ranges are reproduced pretty well with no particular range given undue boost. The bass is punchy, there’s good clarity in vocals with decent instrument separation, and the highs have sufficient sparkle without sounding sibilant. There is ample detail and good balance in the overall sound output. If you do not like the default sound profile, the Zepp app provides you with a 10-band equaliser to finetune it further.

The battery life is impressive too, with the buds clocking over 8 hours despite the fitness tracking, while the case can charge them twice more taking the total battery backup close to 25 hours. The buds are comfortable to wear and have touch controls that can be configured from the app. You can assign up to two different tasks for each bud to be performed when you double or triple-tap them. The Amazfit PowerBuds are loaded with features and have a well-rounded sound output to go with it; a sure-shot winner.

Honourable mention:

Creative Outlier Air

Best TWS Earbuds of 2020 under Rs 5,000

Oppo Enco W51 and Realme Buds Air Pro

If the choice between the Liberty 2 and Outlier Air was tough, the one between Oppo Enco W51 and Realme Buds Air Pro was even tougher. Their feature set is evenly matched offering functional active noise cancellation, touch controls and wear detection. The Oppo pair goes a step further with support for wireless charging, but the Realme buds have better battery backup. While there is more detail in the sound output of the former, the overall sound is a tad too bright for comfort. In case of the latter, despite slightly lesser detail, the overall sound signature is a lot more pleasant, and will appeal to a much broader audience looking to buy TWS buds in this budget.

Oppo Enco W51

The Oppo Enco W51 are certainly more comfortable to wear and have better call quality, but the Realme Buds Air Pro have lower latency, much better controls and customisation, courtesy of the Realme Link app. They sport a similar price tag too, and depending on your needs and taste in sound, one of the two will appeal to you more than the other. As you can see, it is still hard for us to choose a clear winner between the two. Hence, we decided to call it a tie, and include both the earbuds in our list of best TWS under Rs 5,000 this year.

OnePlus Buds Z

After two rather underwhelming audio releases this year, OnePlus pulled an ace out of the pack towards the end of this year. The OnePlus Buds Z are not just loaded with features that you don’t expect to see for a selling price of Rs 2,999, but also have the performance to match, and even exceed their higher-priced siblings, the OnePlus Buds. These IP55-rated TWS buds are extremely comfortable to wear with an excellent fit. You get wear detection and limited, but responsive touch controls for audio playback.

The sound quality is excellent for the segment, with tight and punchy bass, sharp vocals with more than decent instrument separation and detail. There is sufficient sparkle in the highs to lend a nice balance to the overall sound output. The call quality is quite good too, and the overall battery life stands close to 18 hours with the case. All this translates into excellent value for money, and hence, a well-deserved spot among the best of this year.
